During my undergraduate studies in psychology, I had the opportunity to work on a research project that focused on the relationship between social support and academic performance in college students.
I was particularly interested in this topic because I had personally struggled with adjusting to college life and the demands of coursework, and I wondered if having a strong social support system could help alleviate some of these challenges.
To investigate this question, I recruited a sample of 50 college students and administered a survey that measured their social support levels, as well as their grades in their current course load. I also asked them to report on any perceived stressors or challenges they were facing in their personal lives.
After analyzing the data, I found that there was a significant positive correlation between social support and academic performance. In other words, students who reported having higher levels of social support from friends and family tended to have better grades.
Furthermore, I found that students who reported experiencing personal stressors, such as financial or family difficulties, tended to have lower levels of social support and worse grades. This suggests that social support may be especially important for students facing additional challenges outside of their academic responsibilities.
Overall, my project helped to shed light on the importance of social support for college students, and the potential benefits it can have for academic performance. It also highlighted the need for universities to provide resources and support systems for students who may be struggling with personal stressors and the demands of college life.
