Racial prejudice: The most obvious form of prejudice in the novel is racial prejudice against African Americans. This prejudice is evident in the segregation that exists in Maycomb, the town in which the novel is set. African Americans are not allowed to attend the same schools or use the same facilities as white people. They are also subjected to racial slurs and discrimination. Tom Robinson, a black man, is falsely accused of raping a white woman and is ultimately killed while trying to escape from prison. His death is a tragic example of the harsh realities of racial prejudice.
Class prejudice: The novel also touches on class prejudice, particularly in the way that the Ewell family is treated. The Ewells are poor and live on the wrong side of town, and as a result, they are looked down upon by many of the other residents of Maycomb. They are viewed as dirty, lazy, and dishonest, and they are not given the same opportunities or respect as those who are wealthier.
