He talks to Greta about something 20 years ago that he held back because he didn't want to scare her. She explains the extremely creepy situation to her. After years of abuse, Dave is full of frustration and rage. David is rushing to complete the dishes because he knows he will have to endure his mother's anger, which includes depriving David of food, if he fails to finish his chores on time. He was skinny because he was constantly deprived of food, and was forced to be the family's slave.

Dave is frightened, and wishes he could fly away forever. This escape gives David a sense of empowerment because he feels like he won. We know his mother has abused him, but we do not yet know how badly. . David automatically thinks he's in trouble and headed to jail because he has been conditioned to believe he is a bad boy. The subsequent chapters give us a brief glimpse of normalcy for David but by the third chapter, we start seeing why David thinks he is a bad boy from first grade all the way through fifth grade of grammar school. The mask completely covers his face except his eyes and large tufts of facial hair is visible around it.
He becomes afraid of her. He realizes now why Mother suddenly started being nice to him. He finds one, and has Greta go through first while Brahms bursts through. . The nurse hugs him, and he is so comforted that he does not want to stop hugging her. He keeps the secret but now knows his mother is sick. Instead, she goes to watch TV.
His experience was one of the worst cases of child abuse reported in California history at the time. Greta knocks on the wall, and they go back to Brahms' room. The family struggled economically and by age 11 Aileen would engage in sexual activities for food, drugs and alcohol. She is hysterical, realizing the adult Brahms was watching her every movement while Malcolm keeps trying to find another path out. She tells him she wishes he had warned her about the doll, but he tells her he doesn't even know how to explain it. He never goes to a Cub Scout meeting again. Mother takes Dave to the hospital, falsely claiming that Dave fell out of bed.
She orders him to tell teachers that the burns came from an accident. The synopsis below may give away important plot points. Thankfully, David is rescued from his own death wish when school officials and Child Services step in during fifth grade. David cleans his wound, which is excruciating but effective. Mother takes Dave and his brothers to say goodbye to Father, but forces Dave to wait in the car. Ziegler, Miss Moss, the nurse, and a police officer. Then, a few weeks later, an officer from social services shows up at the house and asks Dave if his mother ever hits him.
Obviously, someone from Greta's bad past. Once Mother comes home, father is always gone again and things return to normal in the Madhouse. The nights are cold and lonely, and the young boy has never felt more alone: Sometimes at night I would wake up and try to imagine I was a real person, sleeping under an electric blanket, knowing I was safe and that somebody loved me. Afterward, the house burned up, and Brahms died. Greta and Malcolm head to the front door, which is blocked off by Brahms. He is alive and his injuries are minimal, something Mother sees as a failure.
He realizes that Mother has stabbed him. After Mother catches Dave eating trash, she lets him continue. He expects her packed by the morning and that they are leaving. After dinner, Mother scrapes leftovers into the garbage can and then makes Dave wash the dishes with scalding hot water. After half an hour his mother opens the door. Dave and his mother get along better. Chapter 3 As a small child, Dave becomes mischievous, and his mother starts to punish him. She leans in close when an arm shoots out and reels her in.
