Set on the drug-infested council estates of Greenock in Scotland, Sweet Sixteen tells the tale of a teenage boy struggling to drum up enough money to start a new life for himself and his family. He even appears in front of his attackers in a stairwell, as if by magic - having been left face down on the gravel behind them just a moment before. It is freedom, and its simplicity makes it all the more convincing. Context When and where the film is made and by who. You laugh watching it, caught unawares by the suspicion that Loach has not made a film at all, but simply observed a couple of teenagers going about their usual business. T he hero of Ken Loach's new film is Liam, a lairy young lad a few weeks shy of his 16th birthday, caught with his friend Pinball selling contraband fags in a pub, without reference to HM customs and excise. Pinball is kicked out, angering him further; the gang members advise Liam to "dump" Pinball for good. Better to beat the convenient excuse. He is in most of the narrative but towards the end is gone and saved from the life he craves which could potentially put him in a lot of danger because of his personality. The trust between the cast and production crew must be absolute, and the freedom they allow one another lends the film a sense of unpredictability. Martins only motivation through out the film is his mother.

But their small business is co-opted by a local kingpin Martin McCardie who recognizes Compston's ingenuity and brings him under his wing, helping him establish a clever distribution front with his buddies in pizza delivery. It reads like a classic downward spiral drama, Requiem for a Dream without the budget or the beauty. As he becomes further embroiled in the business and his aspirations change, his family falls apart and he betrays his friendships; is it the drugs that cause the crisis, or the capitalist pressures exerting their influence over the fragile family bond? Pinball wants to get money and get a good job but inside he is still a young boy who wants to act like a grown up by copying what they do and most of the adults in his life do drugs and so that is what he wants to do but Liam doesnt allow him to not because it is bad for his health but because it is bad for business. Some moments feel underdeveloped, others horseshoed in, but the emotional impact of the film is thankfully never lost, and its social commentary remains strong. She only found out the truth when she saw the final film at the end of filming. Although Laverty in particular crafts a fascinating story, the way in which it jumps from beat to beat is not so inspired, Sweet Sixteen feeling particularly formulaic and even repetitive at times, the whole film feeling like a repeated journey down a bumpy road of ups and downs, many of which offer little to expand upon the value of the last. We discover that he has killed best friend Pinball above right after the deed, and it is a shocking and uncomfortable moment. He makes most of his decisions on the idea that it would help his mother which some may think as obsessive. . Still, this feels like a breath of fresh air compared to Loach's recent work, if only because our hero isn't a blameless salt-of-the-earth fellow being inexorably ground underneath his inequitable society's wheels. Give me The Angel's Share any day. Although this is far from his best, it's well worth checking out if you can handle the typically bleak nature.
We know that Pinball didnt have the parental role models that some one so young needs to look up to. It's very different from the comically hyperactive world of, say, Danny Boyle's Trainspotting, with its riffing voiceovers, set pieces and stars. Loach undeniably presents a recognisable worldview, but his work is primarily humanist, even humanitarian; he shows us an individual story rather than building a political allegory. Determined to have a normal family life once his mother gets out of prison, a Scottish teenager from a tough background sets out to raise the money for a home. How does regional identity play a part in the difference in Liam and Mias characters? He rides pillion on a pizza scooter as a cover for his door-to-door "deliveries", a time-consuming business; the legitimate pizzas go cold, and the poor driver whinges at him to "get a fuckin' move on". It is a masterful effect by all involved. The aftertaste of this film has sweetness in spite of everything.

He wants to help her have a better life and make her happy even if she is determined to be with her boyfriend Stan who committed a crime which she covered up for and agreed to go to prison for. Loach's social-realist drama, written by his longtime collaborator Paul Laverty, is a distinctive, piercingly serious vision. This heightened sense of realism leads us to enter into a willing sympathy with the central characters, and creates a very real tension as you watch the film.
