The Milagro Beanfield War is a 1988 novel by John Nichols. Set in the small town of Milagro, New Mexico, the story follows the struggles of a community of farmers and their fight against a wealthy developer who wants to turn their land into a luxury resort.
At the center of the conflict is Ladd Devine, the developer, who represents the forces of progress and modernity. Opposing him is Joe Mondragon, a local farmer and the leader of the resistance. Joe and the other farmers, including his friend and ally, Chicano activist and Vietnam veteran Billy Bonney, see the development as a threat to their way of life and the natural beauty of the land.
As the tension between the two sides grows, the conflict becomes increasingly violent, with both sides resorting to sabotage and intimidation. The farmers are aided by a group of unconventional outsiders, including a group of New Age hippies and a Hollywood screenwriter.
Ultimately, the farmers are able to win a small victory when they succeed in stopping the development and saving their land. However, their victory is bittersweet, as the cost of the conflict has left the community divided and deeply scarred.
The Milagro Beanfield War is a powerful tale of the struggles faced by small communities in the face of outside forces. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving tradition and the natural world, and the dangers of unchecked progress.

Having nature represent such an array of feelings and emotions has truly resonated with myself and hopefully all readers who take the time to understand this novel. An accidental breakdown of a valve on the irrigation ditch launches a hot confrontation between local farmers and corrupt authorities. Opponents of the development are a group of the Hispanic farmers and sheep men of the fictional town of Milagro. Gradually, the small farmers and sheepmen begin to rally to Joe's beanfield as the symbol of their lost rights and their lost lands. Mondrag贸n ended up shooting a townsperson over a pig, and the undercover policeman, Kyril Montana stakes out Joe Mondrag贸n, trying to follow every move, but to his dismay he is shot by a three-man team, Ruby, her son and her significant other. Frustrated, and unable to find work, Joe visits his father's field. There was discussion of taxation of the people of Milagro for the funding of the dam, and news of a resort to be built was also circulating around the town.

The power of this novel seems to seep off the pages, standing for more than what the title may hold, representing lives and culture, far more important than just a beanfield.
