Elizabeth is a 1998 British historical drama film directed by Shekhar Kapur and written by Michael Hirst. The film stars Cate Blanchett in the title role of Queen Elizabeth I, with a supporting cast that includes Geoffrey Rush, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Fiennes, and Richard Attenborough.

The film portrays the early years of Elizabeth's reign, beginning with the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary I, and ending with the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. It is a heavily fictionalized account of Elizabeth's life, but it does manage to capture the essence of the queen and the challenges she faced during her early years on the throne.

One of the main themes of the film is the power struggle between Elizabeth and her advisors, who are divided between those who want her to marry and produce an heir, and those who want her to remain single and concentrate on ruling the country. Elizabeth is torn between these two conflicting desires, and ultimately decides to remain single and focus on her duties as queen.

Another theme of the film is the threat of assassination and betrayal, as Elizabeth's enemies plot to kill her and take the throne for themselves. This is exemplified by the character of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who is portrayed as a scheming and ambitious man who wants to marry Elizabeth and become king.

Overall, Elizabeth is a well-acted and visually stunning film that provides a compelling portrayal of one of England's most famous monarchs. While it may not be completely historically accurate, it is an enjoyable and engaging film that brings Elizabeth's story to life in a way that is both entertaining and informative.

The other characters, however, are little more than stereotypes: the noble protector, the wily servant, the arch villain, the usurper, and so forth.

Elizabeth rejects Henry's marriage proposal when she discovers he is a cross-dresser and confronts Lord Robert about his secrets, fracturing their idyllic affair and banishing him from her private residence. De Vere's intimate and conflicted relations with powerful persons such as William Cecil or even Queen Elizabeth I, often dramatized or even lampooned in the plays, meant that the plays were a political tinderbox. The synopsis below may give away important plot points. The plays and poems of Shakespeare indeed seem to describe key figures in the court for example, Burleigh as Polonius, Ophelia as Oxford's wife, Anne Cecil, the Queen as the "dark lady" of the sonnets, and so forth.

In fact, she entertained the idea of marriage with several European monarchs well into middle age. I think they had a fascinating relationship and the MQoS storyline suffered for it because just watching Elizabeth pace around shouting about how she wanted it stopped was somuch less interesting than the actual backlash of her finding out that Cecil had completely ignored an order she sent him and just executed mary any way.
