Cold Sassy Tree is a novel by Olive Ann Burns that was published in 1984. The story is set in the small town of Cold Sassy, Georgia in 1906 and follows the life of 14-year-old Will Tweedy as he navigates the complexities of growing up and coming of age.

At the start of the novel, Will's grandfather, E. Rucker Blakeson, passes away suddenly, leaving Will to deal with the grief and confusion that comes with such a loss. However, Blakeson's death is not the only event that Will must face during the course of the novel. Soon after, Blockson's widow, Miss Love Simpson, announces that she will be marrying a man named Rucker Lattimore, much to the shock and dismay of the community.

As the novel progresses, Will becomes increasingly involved in the lives of Miss Love and Rucker, and he begins to learn about the complexities of relationships and the importance of being true to oneself. Along the way, he also confronts his own feelings about love, loss, and growing up, as he grapples with the changes taking place in his own life.

One of the themes that emerges in Cold Sassy Tree is the idea of tradition and change. Throughout the novel, Will and the other characters in the story are confronted with the challenge of balancing the traditions and values of their small town with the changes and progress that are taking place in the world around them. This is particularly evident in the relationship between Miss Love and Rucker, as their unconventional marriage defies the expectations and norms of the community.

Another theme that is explored in the novel is the power of love and the importance of family. Despite the challenges and obstacles that Will and the other characters face, the bond of family remains strong, and love ultimately triumphs over adversity. This is demonstrated in the way that Will's family comes together to support one another during difficult times, and in the way that Miss Love and Rucker's love for each other helps them to overcome the obstacles that they face.

In conclusion, Cold Sassy Tree is a poignant and thought-provoking novel that deals with themes of tradition, change, love, and family. Its depiction of the struggles and triumphs of growing up and coming of age will resonate with readers of all ages, and its engaging and well-developed characters will leave a lasting impression.

El Filibusterismo

Although El Filibusterismo is a story that revolves around several characters, they were not difficult to keep track on because of how Rizal molded each character. Hearing this, Simoun turns to Padre Salvi and pointedly remarks at how ungallant the Archbishop had been. I approached El Filibusterismo picks up the general narrative development from where Noli Me Tangere left it 13 years later and in such a way that the one misses little not for having read the first one. It is a revenge story. El Fili as it is popularly called, is a darker and more evolved novel compared to Noli.

If Calamba were the basis for San Diego, the Binondo and San Diego locations in Noli seems to be more realistic. Similarly the illustrative quotes chosen here are merely those the complete review subjectively believes represent the tenor and judgment of the review as a whole. The novel is entitled Noli Me Tangere, which in Latin implies " Touch Me Not". This controversial topic has even been the topic for various movies including the 1939 movie, Mr. Smith goes to Washington. Through them the colonial milieu is expanded--its officialdom, education, legal system, power plays, social patterns--and seen anew as context for conflict and insight. Why or why not? In the end, he decided that the Filipinos are not yet ready for a bloody revolution, so there goes the lamp.

Fili is altogether hatred from page 1 until the last chapter except in the last scene. The characters and their motivations were so well-built. At the beginning of El Filibusterismo Ibarra is supposed to be long dead, and in his stead Simoun is introduced, a jewelry merchant whom little is known about. In fairness, they achieved a bit of victory so they were able to declare our independence in 1898 and installed a revolutionary government but it was short-lived because Spain hurriedly sold the county to the Americans to the tune of twenty million dollars as agreed in the Treaty of Paris in that same year.

It's interesting to note that while Rizal's death inspired the Philippine revolution, this book actually advocates non-violence. This novel deeply affected the feelings of the north and it greatly changed peoples views of slavery. What is the story of El Filibusterismo all about? They want the people to fight for their country and have the total freedom. The young man continued to speak and said that freedom and wisdom are included in the personality of a creature. El Filibusterismo: Subversion: A Sequel to Noli Me Tangere by José Rizal

Personally, I prefer El Filibusterismo over Noli Me Tangere because the earlier novel shows the true characteristics of Filipino — that of loving his country even it would mean their lives. Originally written to show the millions of Filipinos the atrocities done by the Spanish government during their rule of the Philippines, both novels eventually sprung into a life of their own when Dr. Translator Soledad Lacson-Locsin is the first to have worked from facsimile editions of the original manuscripts. After helping Basilio in burying Sisa and burning Elias on Christmas Eve, Ibarra went to Cuba, made himself rich, met and befriended the now Governor General assigned in the Philippines, he is now fully poised to get Maria Clara from the convent and stage his revenge against those who wronged him. The result is the most authoritative and faithful English translation to date, one which attempts to preserve in English the cadence and color of the original.

Another gripe I had, which had nothing to do with the production, was the etiquette or lack thereof of much of the audience. I read this in high school. In the end, Isagani remained to be all bluster, bilge, and bombast - and the worst snake of them all: a hypocrite - and I loved it. What is the real message of El Filibusterismo? It's good to learn the history of the Filipinos to the eyes or someone who experienced it first hand. However, the 13 years in Cuba was, for me, not enough for Simoun to gather all those treasures that he claimed to have even come from Marie Antoinette and the pyramids in Egypt.

To appease her, he prepared a cave for her where she lived and died. They loved each other since they were kids. There are a variety of reasons for why the plans are not carried through as originally intended, but certainly Rizal's own message as also expressed by characters in the book is that violence is not the preferred solution, and that, while change is necessary, it should come about peacefully and sensibly.
