Cosi is a play written by Australian playwright Louis Nowra in the 1970s. The play is set in a psychiatric hospital, where a young director named Lewis is hired to put on a play with a group of patients who are suffering from various mental illnesses. Lewis initially has doubts about his ability to direct the play and about the value of using theatre as therapy, but he eventually comes to see the transformative power of art.

The play follows the rehearsals and eventual performance of the play-within-a-play, Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. The patients, who are initially skeptical and resistant to the idea, gradually become more invested in the production as they take on various roles and work together to bring the play to life.

Throughout the process, Lewis struggles with the challenges of working with a cast of patients who have varying levels of mental illness and capability. He also grapples with the ethical dilemma of using the patients' personal experiences and traumas as material for the play.

Despite these challenges, the patients and Lewis form close bonds and the play becomes a source of healing and empowerment for them. The performance is a success and the patients are able to find a sense of purpose and meaning through their participation in the play.

In the end, Lewis comes to understand the value of using art as therapy and the importance of giving voice to those who may not otherwise be heard. Cosi is a poignant and thought-provoking exploration of the power of art to heal and bring people together.

This escalates to the opening night, where Nick confronts Lewis. The humour is entertaining and I found a sympathy more with the people who were unwell, than those living outside of the asylum. There's quite a few lines about the double standards between men and women when it comes to love and infidelity, but it didn't seem like Lewis really came to grips with that. Despite Lewis trying to pull everyone together, the audience and Lewis realise that the patients remain unpredictable. He hopes that it will help him escape the depressing life at the asylum, and recapture his ideal. Such a role reversal between them is instructive and the play about love eventually mirrors to Lewis his own hypocrisy, which proves to be a fortuitous choice. .

It struck me as a bit weird, though. Hence, Lewis discovers reality in a way. The peculiar smell in the theater of old burned leaves is suddenly explained when Lewis meets Doug, who is a pyromaniac, but who never has to take responsibility for the fires that he sets because Cherry owns up to starting them even when she didn't. This changes one day when he actually gets one of the jobs he applies for - a drama teacher, and play director, at a nearby hospital for the mentally ill. Lewis' inner journey has provided him with a new understanding of not only himself but the world around him. I also love that it's an Australian play!! Reality and Illusion Just as one should deservedly expect a play set in a mental institution to examine the nature of madness, so it is a given that when there is a play-within-a-play one of the dominant themes will be the nature of reality versus illusion. Lewis learns morals throughout the novel by doing the right thing for the patients and not judging them because of where they are. Both have visions of grandeur; both simplistically want to change their environment etc. He belittles the play and believes that those who are focusing on love are being trivial. Although Roy does have anti-social tendencies and shortcomings such as his paranoia and stage-fright and a deprived childhood which has yielded to romantic illusions, it would be too simplistic to conclude that these are a sign of madness.
