Children of the River is a novel by Linda Crew that tells the story of Sundara, a Cambodian refugee who is struggling to adapt to life in the United States after fleeing the Khmer Rouge regime. The novel explores themes of identity, family, and the immigrant experience.

Sundara is a complex and multi-faceted character who is struggling to find her place in a new country and culture. She is torn between her traditional Cambodian values and the expectations of American society, and she is often caught between her desire to fit in and her desire to stay true to herself.

One of the main themes of the novel is the importance of family and the bond between siblings. Sundara's relationship with her younger brother, Sokha, is particularly poignant. Sokha is a constant source of support and comfort for Sundara, and she finds solace in his presence as she navigates the challenges of her new life.

Another major theme of the novel is the immigrant experience and the challenges that immigrants face when trying to adapt to a new country. Sundara faces numerous obstacles as she tries to build a new life in the United States, including language barriers, cultural differences, and discrimination. Despite these challenges, she remains determined and resilient, ultimately finding the strength and courage to pursue her dreams.

Overall, Children of the River is a poignant and thought-provoking novel that explores the complexities of identity and the immigrant experience. It is a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit and the enduring bonds of family.

He published six adult novels in the seventies and eighties that received accolades, were brought out in many languages, and even made the Publishers Weekly bestseller list. And even worse, it's written so terribly that I can't stand it! Many more modern reviews consider Sundara's aunt "weird", Sundara herself "boring", and the book's apparent anti-communist slant to be too western-biased. Life is hard for her. And when I realized the extent to which the problem of addiction to prescription drugs was affecting people all across the nation, I knew I needed to speak up and be at least one of the people telling this story. In hindsight, I was ridiculed by my more popular peers during senior year, just like the characters in this book those dicks! So she moved there and she has to make new girl freinds but not boy ones though because she cant hang with boys unless the parents approve because their parents have to make a arranged marriages and thats the only boy they can hang out with.

I think having read this book when I was in 8th grade as well as other books on genocide, I was better equipped to have those difficult conversations as a teenager and to bridge cultural divides during high school and later in life. One must not try too hard to hold onto the past or one will be left behind. While Sundara is more honest and bold with her American classmates than what I suspect the average newly arrived refugee would be, I still think it is a good, well written book. Having read about this title in I felt connected to this family from the first sentence, glued to the page through two quick chapters of escaping on foot and then an unpleasant sea voyage before the story skips ahead four years, to when Sundara and her relatives are established in their own house in the U. He married Catherine Crise Cree ca.

Things would be hard ecspecially if you fell in love with a forbidden American boy. Arthur is almost finished with it and is enjoying it. Sundara is a girl with a lot of baggage in her life. I thought that the book was pretty well written. Through the book she is hiding their love from her Aunt. Sundara is a Cambodian girl, around the age of 17 for most of the book.

I had a negative impression of this book after reading the first chapter because I felt that it was poorly written and the dialogue and interactions between the characters seemed stilted and unnatural. Today, it might be difficult to even fathom this, but not impossible, as a new wave of Ukrainian refugees are coming here to flee attacks on their home country. I see now how deeply and richly Linda Crew incorporated questions of love, loss, guilt, assimilation, and responsibility. Do I like them? Sundara has trouble understanding Jonathan's relationship with Cathy. This theme is most apparent in Pok Simo and his family. My wife read it and loved it.

This story clung to me for years after I read it, and proved to be a tremendous insight when I encountered a number of Somalian refugee stude Culturally rich and poignantly memorable. All the stations go dead. I believe this book showed this struggle accurately as Sundara had to balance between wanting to fit in as well as keep some Cambodian traditions. She constantly struggles to fit in at her high school in Oregon, but at the same time, she struggles to keep some of her Cambodian traditions that Children of the river by Linda Crew is another book with an immigration theme. He eventually married two or three more times. I would recommend this book to anyone who can relate to the struggles of adjusting to a new culture. They wanted to escape the war, killings, and horror taking place in their country.

. I learned alot about Cambodia and the Pol Pot era and feel very bad for all the families that suffered through that. It would hardly be appropriate for you to be telling her how to do things, would it? And thirdly, the plot was soooooo retarded. The Cambodian inmigrant falling in love with the high school football star was entertaining, but seriously. At the same time she wonders, Are her hopes for happiness and new life in America disloyal to her past and her people? Also, a soft introduction to some very heavy geopolitical issues as well.

If I was the new kid, every single popular guy would probably tease me to no end. I love that he stands up to his parents and that his dad actually listens and takes real action. I enjoyed the story then, but like other readers, I rolled my eyes a bit at the aunt's behavior. So do cultural clashes, and generational clashes, and guilt. He quits the football team because he wants to devote more time to charity. You can help us out by revising, improving and updating thissection. Naturally, he was secretly dating a Polish-immigrant-non-muslim student instead, using me as a red herring, but I digress.

Perhaps understated in the details, but that still came across very powerfully 2. That's what I get for reading young adult's novels. All that ridicule my senior year and you know what? A Khmer teenager once living in Cambodia with her family, one day she is listening to a song on the radio when it suddenly shuts off, is interrupted by violent voices declaring a new government, and goes dead. While other girls her age are cheerleading at football games, Sundara has to pick and sell produce for the kindly if not somewhat racially out of touch farmer, Mr. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Sundara also works Mr. We all need to read many, many of these. See my review if interested. This is because although it teached me alot about cambodian tradition and about imigration I didnt find it all that interesting. Then come to find out your going to a totally different country and all your friends and family are being killed by the second. The story is told from Sundara's third person point of view.
