CHAPTER 1 Night is generally my time for walking. Oscar Wilde remarked that 'One would have to have a heart of stone to read the death of little Nell without dissolving into tears. She resents Quilp for the way he treats her daughter, but is too afraid to stand up to him. Meanwhile, a stranger is also looking for Nell's grandfather. They are fellow guests at the public house where Nell and her grandfather, unable to get home, pass a stormy night. She is occasionally referred to as a "dragon", and she mistreats the Marchioness. For my part, my curiosity and interest were at least equal to the child's, for child she certainly was, although I thought it probably from what I could make out, that her very small and delicate frame imparted a peculiar youthfulness to her appearance. Wharf owner Daniel Quilp Sir Tom Courtenay has given large amounts of money to Nell's grandfather as an investment, expecting a large profit. Their bright blue eyes were certainly alike, but his face was so deeply furrowed and so very full of care, that here all resemblance ceased. The question is who makes the best performance here, as they are all excellent, but I think the price still goes to Tom Courtenay as the terrible Quilp, whom he succeeds in rendering even more ghastly and abominable than he is already in the novel, as Courtenay adds so much to the character with his hypocrisy and cringing manners of outrageous guile that the interpretation becomes a masterpiece of acting. There were suits of mail standing like ghosts in armour here and there, fantastic carvings brought from monkish cloisters, rusty weapons of various kinds, distorted figures in china and wood and iron and ivory: tapestry and strange furniture that might have been designed in dreams. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms. The period atmosphere was excellent, as were the costumes and sets. While we were sitting thus in silence, the door of the closet opened, and the child returned, her light brown hair hanging loose about her neck, and her face flushed with the haste she had made to rejoin us. Quilp forms a grudge against Kit and has him framed as a thief. This gatehouse building still exists in Much Park Street. A wonderful story of human tragedy and triumph. The more I thought of what the old man had said, and of his looks and bearing, the less I could account for what I had seen and heard.

Charles Dickens is one of the best-loved novelists in the English language, whose 200th anniversary was celebrated in 2012. The haggard aspect of the little old man was wonderfully suited to the place; he might have groped among old churches and tombs and deserted houses and gathered all the spoils with his own hands.
