Brandon Teena was born as Teena Brandon in 1972 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He identified as male from a young age and began living as a man in the early 1990s. In the fall of 1993, he began a relationship with Lana Tisdel, a young woman in Falls City, Nebraska. However, when Lana's ex-boyfriend, John Lotter, discovered that Brandon was transgender, he and another man, Tom Nissen, became determined to "teach Brandon a lesson."
On December 31, 1993, Lotter and Nissen broke into the home where Brandon was staying and brutally attacked him. They also attacked Lana and her friend, Philip Devine, who were present at the time. Brandon was raped and shot in the head, and his body was dumped in a field. Lana and Philip survived the attack, but Brandon did not.

Now they had their suspects tied clearly to the murder weapons. Nobody knows he is a repeat rapist who has raped other women before he got busted for triple murder. Nissen testified that he stabbed Brandon, but that Lotter fired the shots that killed all three victims. Had Teena Brandon been getting quality psychiatric care, they would have addressed her sex abuse trauma, her eating disorder, her OCD, her alcohol abuse, and only then suggest sex reassignment etc. Therefore, postconviction relief on this basis was properly denied without an evidentiary hearing. In some cases children younger than 10 have been prosecuted as adults. Lotter and Nissen, both of whom had already served time in the state penitentiary on other charges, had been involved in a variety of unhappy relationships, drank heavily, and had floated from job to job. Before Lotter's trial, Nissen was convicted in a separate trial of first degree murder in the death of Brandon and second degree murder in the deaths of Lambert and DeVine.
