Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama in 1926. She was the youngest of four children to Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee. Her father, a lawyer, was a compassionate man who served as the model for the character Atticus Finch in her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
Lee attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama for one year before transferring to the University of Alabama to study law. However, she eventually left school to pursue her writing career.
In the 1950s, Lee moved to New York City to work as a ticket agent for Eastern Airlines. While there, she began writing To Kill a Mockingbird, drawing on her childhood experiences growing up in Alabama and her observations of the civil rights movement. The book was published in 1960 and was an immediate success, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1961.
To Kill a Mockingbird is considered a classic of modern American literature, and its themes of racial injustice and the loss of innocence continue to resonate with readers today. It has been translated into more than 40 languages and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.
Despite the success of To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee shied away from the spotlight and became a reclusive figure. She rarely gave interviews or made public appearances, and she never published another book.
Lee died on February 19, 2016 at the age of 89. Despite her reluctance to be in the public eye, she remains an iconic figure in American literature and an inspiration to aspiring writers everywhere.

The Written Review: If you haven't read this as an adult - pick it up today I think there's just one kind of folks. I actually just read it for the first time at 25 - I was an English major in college with a concentration in African-American literat I totally agree. I was struggling to finish it, I swear I let out a relieved sigh when I read the last sentence. And then there is the magic of the slow measured narration painting the most vivid picture of the sleepy Southern town where there's enough darkness lurking inside the people's souls to be picked up even by very young, albeit quite perceptive children. The Browns also helped her get a literary agent, who got an editor at J. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Translated into 40 languages with 30 million copies in print, Mockingbird's success also inspired the box office smash, To Kill a Mockingbird, starring Gregory Peck.
