The Alchemist is a novel by Paulo Coelho that tells the story of Santiago, a shepherd boy who dreams of discovering a treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. Along the way, he meets a series of interesting characters and learns important lessons about life and following one's dreams.

One of the most striking aspects of The Alchemist is its beautiful and poetic writing style. Coelho's prose is full of imagery and symbolism, making it a rich and rewarding reading experience. The novel also has a strong spiritual element, as Santiago embarks on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment.

Another strength of the novel is its compelling and relatable main character. Santiago is a likable and determined protagonist, and readers will root for him as he faces the challenges and setbacks that come with pursuing his dream. The other characters in the novel, such as the wise alchemist and the mysterious Englishman, are also well-developed and add depth to the story.

One potential criticism of The Alchemist is that it may be too heavy-handed in its themes and moral lessons. Some readers may find the novel's messages about following one's dreams and the power of the universe to be a bit preachy. However, for the most part, these themes are woven seamlessly into the story and do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the novel.

Overall, The Alchemist is a beautifully written and thought-provoking novel that is sure to appeal to readers of all ages. Its strong character development, poetic prose, and powerful themes make it a must-read for anyone seeking a meaningful and inspiring reading experience.

Coelho's placebo has racked up impressive sales in Brazil and Europe. Through determination and never giving up, Santiago is able to defeat these challenges and as a result find his treasure. I grabbed a couple smaller books from my shelf, one being "The Alchemist", and promised myself I would finally read it. Despite the unconditional love Santiago has for them, he expresses in a veiled way how his animals only yearn for food, water and nothing else. After meeting with some important people, he begins his "Personal Legend", to find what his true purpose in life is.

He had to make the decision to give up his sheep and risk everything in pursuit of his personal legend. For two nights, Santiago encounters the same dream, illustrating a young girl showing him a path to a treasure at the foot of the Egyptian pyramids. With a dreamy and pensive writing style, the author weaves into the storyline multiple sage concepts which a philosopher could ponder for years on. Santiago meets many people during his journey including a palm reader, old man, thief, crystal merchant, girl, and an alchemist. Love is the second obstacle that we face as we are afraid of hurting those around us by leaving them. In The Alchemist author urge people to follow their dream and not to sidestep their destinies.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo

alchemist novel review

After all, I really wanted to read something beyond exceptional after trudging through too much un-original dystopian fiction — and the universe gave me The Alchemist! From this intensive interest and use of the Internet sprang his bold new project: The Experimental Witch where he invites his readers to adapt to the screen his book The Witch of Portobello. It is a simple thing but has a lot of meanings. During his journey, Santiago learns more about his surroundings and things that also helped him grow. Santiago strived to find his personal legend with the help of people he met on the way to find treasure that he is destined to find , just to realize the treasure was where he had fallen asleep in the beginning of the book. On his way, he meets a gypsy and asks her to interpret his recurring dream about treasure buried near the Egyptian pyramids. It is very inspirational and teaches us very simple but very important lessons of life and helps us to understand life and its purpose.

As he meets people and overcomes obstacles he learns things that he need to learn to achieve his personal legend. Through Santiago's adventures, he meets two important figures: a King, and an Alchemist. Paulo Coelho makes this very clear in the novel by using the character Santiago to show that anyone can make their dreams become a reality. The story is about a youth empowered to follow his dream. The novel has taught me lessons no other book or human can, which is why I hope that someday, everyone will find this treasure and read it. When you really want something, the universe always conspires in your favour. Santiago starts to understand the world around him in a deeper way and listen to his heart with an open mind.

Maybe it was the fact that my dad's favorite books are historical encounters and biographies, his suggestion to read it was not the push I needed. Ultimately, I recommend this book to anyone. Life gets busy, and I had so many other books to read that "The Alchemist" did not leave my bookshelf for a while. Santiago still struggles to find meaning and purpose throughout his many years of travel though. The Alchemist teaches the boy the importance of believing in himself and trusting his heart. The third and fourth obstacles are fear of defeat and the fear of realizing the dream for which we fought all our lives. One of my favorite quotes from this philosophical and inspiring story is found on page 27.
