Sarah, so sad, so rational, so able to see what was happening and speak about the outcome. The Salem Witch Trials were a dark time in American history, because innocent people were hanged. Not only was this taken to excess it was unmorally wrong. When you realize that Rebecca was on trial three times, found innocent twice, but found guilty for not answering as swiftly as they thought she should, and then finding that she was hard of hearing, makes this story that much more tragically sad. Jealousy was a huge part because of the rich people having better land or have more money so people accused them to be able to own their stuff.

Both reveal the probable and very human and selfish motives that motivated the religious hysteria. All three of them fought back in their own ways, and after the deaths of Rebecca and Mary, both elderly and pillars of the community, the Towne family broke Sarah out of her prison cell which was merely an old back shed in someone's yard--by this time the jail was full and the accused were being housed by all sorts of greedy people who were paid to house them ; they took her back to her childhood home in Topsfield, which was out of the jurisdiction of Salem Village. And if you rub your hands together nervously? This is one of the places I am excited to visit later this fall. They began having hallucinations and seizures. This started a huge chain and the trials were huge and extreme.

Sarah was quite courageous for having endured being jailed and treated so inhumanely, and then fighting to clear the good names of her sisters, who endured the same inhuman jailing, and subsequent hangings. But it really happened, and I'm glad I watched it. I would highly recommend this series as an accurate account of the Salem Witch Trials and what harm a seemingly innocent game can perpetrate when allowed to get out of hand or into the impressionable minds of young people for whom fantasy as a game sometimes becomes belief or sometimes, in the extreme, an obsession. Aside from the witch hysteria and the resulting horrific and senseless hangings, this film portrays a realistic presentation of the world of Colonial America, in which the Puritans lived. A "witchcraft craze" rippled through Europe from the 1300s to the end of the 1600s. This becomes apparent by the end of the film. Each issue examines the relationship of theory and research to classroom practice, and reviews current materials of interest to English teachers, including books and electronic media. But, from what I have read of this book, the gist of what happened in 1692 had more to do with land and political position than with witchcraft.

Had the people of Salem not have taken the words in a book to be actual instructions for life, there would have been no ill feelings towards "witchcraft" in the first place. These trials resulted in the execution of about 20 people, most of them women, and innocent people. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft and about 20 were executed. Actually able to say the Lord's Prayer, even though a witch isn't supposed to be able to recite it? She says more with one facial expression than many actresses and actors can say with a hundred words. Much of it was filmed around Danvers and on the Rebecca Nurse Homestead. Since then, the story of the trials has become synonymous with paranoia and injustice. The so called witches of Salem were accused on faulty evidence and treated harshly.

Granted, I could read up on the subject on Wikipedia, but I happened to watch this last night my wife bought it to show her 8th grade class and felt transported! You can do the math on that. A person could say that someone else's spirit was hurting them and they would use this as enough evidence to prosecute and convict someone of witchcraft. It tells the tale of protagonist John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth.

Equally good is 'Three Sovereigns for Sarah' from 1985 directed by Philip Leacock and starring Vanessa Redgrave, Kim Hunter, Phyllis Thaxter and Patrick McGoohan which powerfully tells the story from the viewpoint of Sarah Cloyce and her sisters. It isn't everyone's story as it covers mainly Rebecca Nurse and Mary Eastey and their sister, the narrator - Sarah Cloyce - played beautifully by Vanessa Redgrave. The trials that took place in 1692 caused neighbors in the community of Salem Village in the colony of Massachusetts to turn on one another out of paranoia, accusing one another of witchcraft. And the town council arrested dozens of people on suspicion of witchcraft. While her sisters are hanged, Sarah is sentenced to a prison term to be served in a box barely large enough for her to lie down in.

On this part of the book is where the tension is rising. Massachusetts went wild with accusations until the governor's wife was accused. Therefore Christianity was essential and by lacking the knowledge, the accused would seem to be working with the Devil. People feared that if they did not plead guilty to being a witch then they would be sentenced to death. That's basically why I gave this three stars instead of two. The film is a powerful, moving story about three loving sisters accused of witchcraft. Acting nothing wrong with Vanessa though! This was a somewhat understated but well-acted series; the understated acting of the adults made the series all the more engaging.

This film portrays a very difficult and desperate time in our history, and Vanessa Redgrave was so convincing in her role as Sarah, that you believe you are watching Sarah's life unfold before your eyes, sad as it was. Because the people Salem Village were Puritans and lived by a very strict moral code, they believed the Bible was to be followed letter for letter. When anyone questioned their inane, they started their fits again, claiming that new person was also a witch.
